Oscars from the Perspective of Coronation Ceremonies: Social Communication of Film Industry - Guo MingLei

[Abstract] After the industrial revolution, the dominant power above society was no longer just religion. Various industries successively established industry standards to replace religious beliefs. Movies were invented in 1895, and the film industry took shape over 30 years later, accompanying the first Oscars in 1929, i.e. the birth of the world's first film awards. By establishing industry standards through setting role models for the film industry, specifically affirming the status of those crowned through coronation ceremonies and enhancing the effect, the Oscars have become a crucial link in film awards. Skillfully applying coronation ceremonies, the Oscars created media events, gained global influence, and played an irreplaceable role in communication and interaction between the film industry and the whole society. Using Van Gennep's theory of "rites of passage" for structural analysis of the Oscars, and assisted by "media event" theory, this paper summarizes the mechanism of the Oscars' role in promoting communication and interaction between the film industry and society as a whole. The research logic is "analysis of ritual functions → analysis of ritual symbolic elements → analysis of ritual structures → interpretation of functional mechanisms".
